Tribute to Bangor attorney raises $10,000 to fight cancer

Written by

BANGOR - A local attorney decided to sail from Lubec to Kittery in honor of his friend who died of cancer.

Along the way, he also raised more than $10,000 to fight the deadly disease.

Jeffrey Silverstein hit the water in a trimaran sailboat given to him by his friend, who passed away in 2011 at the age of 67.

“My good buddy, colleague and mentor, Julio DeSanctis got afflicted with cancer and he fought valiantly for eight years,” Silverstein said Thursday. “I kind of conceived this idea to sail the length of Maine in tribute to him. I went back to his obituary and learned that his chosen charity of the time was CancerCare of Maine.”

More than a hundred people, businesses or organizations contributed to the local 'Sail for the Cure.'

As of Thursday, the tally had reached $10,060. Anyone who wants to find out more, can go to the Sail for the Cure; Whaleback to West Quoddy Head Facebook page.
