BELFAST- The Belfast planning board is currently reviewing the permit application from Nordic Aquafarms.

Land behind the Belfast Water District could soon be home to a land-based salmon farm.

Nordic Aquafarms recently submitted a more than 2,000 page application and now the planning board is reviewing it.

On Wednesday, board members and the public got a look where excavation for pipelines would be, as well as where buildings would be placed.

"Today's (Wednesday) meeting was really a site visit," said Wayne Marshall, Belfast's director of code and planning. "The intent of the site visit is really for the board correlate what they see on a set of plans to what is actually on the ground."

Marshall says there's not a defined deadline for the permit process.

"The process is going to be what it is," he told us. "When we actually get into the process, we see what the amount of public comment is, we see the nature of the questions that have been raised."

He added that they are also working concurrently with the Department of Environmental Protection.

According to an official from the Belfast Water District, Nordic Aquafarms has agreed to purchase a minimum of 100-million gallons per year, for a minimum of 6 years, from the local water district.

They also have an opportunity to continue that for 15 years or longer, which the official said would create a lot of revenue for the rate payers of Belfast.

While there are no public hearings, they are accepting comments through their website.

"We'd really like to emphasize to folks this is really is an open public process," Marshall added. "We started accepting comments the date the application was deemed complete by us on June 12th."

On Thursday night, the planning board will be holding an organizational meeting to determine a schedule for the rest of the review.
