Flamingo Festival returns to Southwest Harbor Featured

SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Flamingos are flocking to Southwest Harbor -- plastic lawn flamingos, that is -- for the annual Harbor House Flamingo Festival.

Diana Novella, the Events and Community Relations Director at Harbor House, said they wanted to create a fun, quirky mascot for the festival. That's how the Flamingo Festival came about.

Novella said the weekend festivities are to celebrate small town life and the community they live in.

This year there will be a lobster bake, pancake breakfast, parade and many more events for the community.

"Everybody is willing to help everybody in a small community and I think this just kind of showcases the importance of that and what it's like living in a small town," Novella said.

Back in the 1950's, Novella explained, Don and Nancy Featherstone of Massachusetts created the pink flamingo lawn ornament. This year, Nancy Featherstone will be the grand marshal of the parade.

The event kicks off Friday night and goes through Monday.
