Migrant kids being held at border focus of vigil

Written by

AUGUSTA - A candlelight vigil is going to be held at the State House to raise awareness about the migrant children being held at the southern border with Mexico.

Organizers of the Lights for Liberty Vigil said they are concerned about reports of children having to sleep on concrete floors and not having enough soap or food.

One of the sponsors of the vigil is the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine and a state senator who works there said the event is intended to draw attention to human rights.

"I think that we have enough that we should be able to take care of children. Children shouldn't be held accountable for the mistakes their parents have made or the circumstances of their birth," said Sen. Shenna Bellows, D-Manchester.

According to the event's Facebook page, the Lights of Liberty Vigil will be one of many held across the country.

Maine's vigil will take place 8 p.m. Friday.
