Moshier said a black pickup truck and large Penske box truck were involved in a head-on collision and the lone driver of the pickup truck was dead when first responders arrived on-scene.
Two others were in the box truck and transported to a Bangor hospital with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.
Moshier said they haven't determined an exact cause yet, but he believes rain could have played a factor.
"Particularly on this stretch of road where this milling has been done, it's absolutely imperative that people use extra caution with this heavy rain and to avoid standing water and avoid hydroplaning," said Chief Moshier.
Ellsworth P.D., Maine State Police and the Ellsworth Fire Department responded to the call.
Officials are continuing to investigate a cause and we'll have more information on the crash when more details become available.
