James Haskell, 41, of Chelsea was found dead inside a home on Yeaton Drive in West Gardiner.
Kennebec County Sherriff Deputies said they responded around 2:45 a.m. Saturday morning. Maine State Police Detectives joined them shortly after. Detectives said there was a small gathering going on inside the residence.
The people who were there when it happened are cooperating through the interview process.
Lt. Jeff Love, Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit, said "We've conducted some interviews to find out the circumstances and the nature of what took place and we are still in that process. We have state police evidence members processing the scene so to speak and we're conducting interviews talking to family and friends."
Police saId they do not believe there is any threat to the public.
At this point, no charges have been filed and no one is in custody.
An autopsy will be scheduled with the state medical examiner's office.
So far no information on a suspect has been released.
