Purple Pinkie Project helping to fight Polio across the globe

BANGOR - Local Rotary Clubs are banding together for a colorful fundraiser to help end polio.

The Bangor Area Rotary Clubs are hosting their 3rd annual "Purple Pinkie Project."

For one dollar, rotary members will paint your pinkie purple.

The idea started when Rotary volunteers began immunizing children in third world countries.

Polio Plus chairperson Scott Boucher said "They actually dye the children's pinkies purple to avoid double vaccinations. But what we found is that these children wear their pinkies with pride in their villages and the volunteers that are there are amazed by the pride they have in that, so we thought what better way to bring that visual part of the program back to the united states, raise a little bit of funds."

The Rotary Club of Bangor will paint pinkies at Wellman Commons Tuesday October 24th, which is World Polio Day.
