Thousands of law enforcement officers from Maine and beyond gathered at the Augusta Civic Center Friday, all to honor Fryeburg Police Officer Nathan Desjardins.
Desjardins was critically injured last month during a boating accident on the Saco River and died days later in a hospital.
He had been responding to a report of a missing canoeist on the Saco River.
Many gathered to pay their respects and support the Desjardins family as they cope with the tragic loss.
Fryeburg Police Chief Joshua Potvin said "And to officer Nathan Desjardins, your professionalism, dedication and enthusiasm and ultimate personal sacrifice for the betterment of our community will never be forgotten."
Desjardins grew up in Albion and attended the University of New England before becoming a police officer. He was just a few weeks away from his 21st birthday when the accident happened.
He is the 85th Maine Law Enforcement Officer to die in the line of duty.
